The Seed for Sinners

With gratefulness to God for His saving grace,
inspired by many conversations this year
and by faithful expositions of God's word,
especially John MacArthur's The Gospel According to Jesus
and sermons on Ezekiel 18
(several concepts and ideas)
and Genesis 3:14-15.

In particular I must credit John MacArthur for the last two lines, which are taken nearly directly from one of his Ezekiel 18 sermons.

--------------------------

It's easy to be bitter, to focus on the pain
Of circumstance and suffering, our own sin to explain.

It's easy to make light of our offences grave or "small,"
To doubt God's good and holy word, forgetting He knows all.

It's easy to excuse, deny, to shift away the blame
To see the fault in others, protecting our own name

Our first parents ere began it. We, their children, follow suit,
Pointing fingers at each other for each fatal bite of fruit.

T'was the serpent, Eve deflected. T'was the woman, Adam cried.
You gave her to me, God! It's surely Your fault if I die!

But the gracious God who warned them slew an animal instead
And covered their transgression though they should have fallen dead.

God told them of a future Seed, One from a woman born
Though bruised, would crush the serpent's head, and triumph evermore.

As prophesied, He came to earth to live among His own
Unrecognized, despised by men, though Savior, Lord alone

He called for sinners to repent, to those who saw their need
Of righteousness not of their own, would Him for mercy plead

As pictured by the animal, the promised Seed did die,
To satisfy God's wrath for sin, His people justify

Ris'n now, the Seed declared the Son of God with power.
Vict'ry is His; Kiss the Son. Serve Him this very hour.

The serpent will one day be judged, with all who follow him
In arrogance to God's commands, and love their foolish sin

But those who love, believe the Son, despising all their sin
Forgiveness, eternal life, and joy to them are freely giv'n

In this fallen, groaning world, we all know hurt and loss,
But the sinless Man of Sorrows died for sinners on the cross.
